My initial instinct was to have the Fall design lean heavily into the literal with between 150 to 200 leaves cascading from the shoulder to the hemline. I painted the fabric and then cut the leaves out in pairs (painted front and unpainted back in red or orange fabric). A blanket stitch in a variegated thread surrounds each leaf. I used Lumiere metallic paint and a thin brush to paint the veins of each leaf.
Since the leaves were so portable, I worked on them on planes and trains and various other places. Was bringing them to Vermont during peak leaf season profound or witty?
I scrapped my initial design when it started looking too much like an actual tree. It was when visiting with the fabric leftover from the leaf making that I draped it onto the mannequin to form a cummerbund and neck band. The leaves cascade from neck line to ground in a train that was finished with tulle and beading.
